Do you know when it’s time to get new tyres to ensure the safety of both yourself and other road users? Read on for four tell-tale signs you need new tyres to replace worn out or damaged ones.
The most obvious sign you need new tyres is a low tread depth. Tread refers to the rubber on the circumference of the tyre that has contact with the road surface. It’s essential in helping your car ‘stick’ to the road but, as you drive, this slowly gets worn away, reducing its traction. Not only does this put you and others at risk, but you also face a fine of £2,500 per tyre! In the UK, the minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, so if yours are worn away below this number, it’s time for new tyres.
While it’s perfectly normal to feel a degree of vibration as you drive, if you begin to notice an unusual amount it could be a sign you need new tyres as the surface on your existing ones has worn away to below a safe level. There are a number of other reasons why your car could be vibrating an unusual amount however, including faulty wheel alignment or shock absorbers, so it’s always advisable to ask a trained mechanic to take a look.
If you notice a crack in the wall of a tyre, change it immediately. Cracks in tyres are quite common faults as the oils and chemicals used in new tyres eventually break down, weakening the structural integrity of the tyre. Tyres with cracks in are incredibly unsafe to drive as they can cause the tyre to ‘blow out’, particularly dangerous if you’re travelling at high speeds.
When the outer surface of a tyre weakens, the pressure inside can push the tyre out in noticeable bulges or blisters. Just like tyre cracks, these unusual features are weak spots that are accidents waiting to happen. As soon as you notice a bulge or blister, get a new tyre fitted to replace the broken one as soon as you can.
