The country’s best breakdown recovery provider revealed

According to a recent poll of motorists who used a roadside recovery service in the last year, the AA has come out on top to be named Britain’s best.

The results of the poll

The poll, commissioned by magazine and website WhatCar?, surveyed more than 2300 drivers and took into account how quickly assistance arrived and if they managed to fix the problem. The AA, Britain’s biggest car recovery and emergency breakdown firm, was found to reach customer in the quickest time, beating all their rivals. It took the AA less than 30 minutes to arrive on scene in 23% of cases, increasing to nearly 75% for arrival within an hour. It also scored well on its ability to fix the problem at the roadside, mending 69% of vehicles there and then.

WhatCar? ranked the seven major roadside assistance companies according to the pole, where the AA was named the best breakdown recovery provider. Next was Green Flag, Autoaid, and perhaps surprisingly in fourth place, the RAC. The worst providers, according to the survey, were then LV= Britannia Rescue, Emergency Assist and at right at the bottom, Allianz Partners UK.

Why the survey is important

The president of AA, Edmund King, said: “AA patrols go above and beyond for our members and this survey shows that their care, compassion and expertise has placed us top of the league once more.” Meanwhile, the editor of WhatCar?, Steve Huntingford, highlighted the importance of the survey: “Most motorists will experience a breakdown at one point or another. Standing by the roadside is never fun, so it’s worth knowing who to call to ensure you are reached quickly by a competent mechanic who will help you get back on the road as soon as possible.”

Official statistics show that car breakdowns are, in fact, on the rise, up from 195,292 cases in England in 2017 to 224,225 in 2018. Indeed, according to Highways England, there was an average of 614 breakdowns on motorways and major A-roads last year, and this doesn’t even include smaller routes.
