Tyres bursting can cause serious problems for your car. It’s important to deal with it logically and in a sensible way to reduce the danger for yourself and the drivers on the road around you. Read on for our expert guide.

Drive safely

The lower the speed, the lower the chance of seriously damaging yourself or the car. Speed limits are there for a reason of course, so remember that if you burst a tyre whilst driving at 70mph or more, the risk is a lot higher than if you burst a tyre whilst doing 50mph.

Don’t make any sudden pedal changes

Instinct dictates that if a tyre bursts, your first reaction is to make an emergency stop. As difficult as it may be to resist the temptation, it’s vital that you don’t; equally, don’t abruptly take your foot off the accelerator. Any sudden movement on either pedal isn’t needed, given that the deceleration force from a blown tyre is strong enough to rapidly slow down your car anyway.

Don’t jerk the steering wheel

If you try and turn a corner or make a sharp turn when a tyre’s blown, this will upset the car’s composure. If a tyre blows, it’s important not to swing one way or another, as this could turn the car over or veer the vehicle into traffic. Keep the vehicle pointed as straight and steady as you can.

Keep the car stable

Even when you’ve gained control, don’t try to over-correct the steering of the car. Stability is vital, especially with the car structurally compromised. Don’t make any sudden movements within the car and don’t alter the speed too sharply.

Gradually coast

Lightly engage the brakes of the car but only when the vehicle has decelerated to a slow speed. Drive on the bare metal of the wheel if you have to but do not stop in the middle of the road if you can. Activate your hazard lights and pull over safely off the road if you can.

How to prevent a bust tyre

Ensuring your tyres are in top condition is the best prevention for unexpected tyre bursts. Regular tyre maintenance not only extends the life of your tyres but also enhances your safety on the road.

  • Regular tyre inspections: Make it a habit to check your tyres for signs of wear, cuts, or bulges, especially before long journeys. Early detection of potential problems can prevent accidents.
  • Maintain proper tyre pressure: Check your tyre pressure monthly and before any extended journeys. More modern cars have sensors that will detect when your tyre pressure needs topping up. Incorrect tyre pressure can lead to overheating, increased wear, and eventually, tyre failure.
  • Tyre rotation: Rotating your tyres according to the manufacturer’s recommended guidelines helps ensure even wear, prolonging their lifespan and reducing the risk of a burst.
  • Avoid overloading: Exceeding your vehicle’s maximum load will exert excessive pressure on your tyres, increasing the risk of a burst. Always stick to the recommended load capacity.
  • Drive carefully: Avoid hitting curbs and driving over potholes or debris, as these can cause immediate damage or weaken your tyres over time.

The importance of carrying a spare tyre

A spare tyre is an essential that every driver should have. In the event of a tyre burst, having a spare tyre can get you back on the road quickly, avoiding the need for immediate roadside assistance.

  • Regularly check your spare tyre: Ensure your spare tyre is in good condition and properly inflated. It’s as important as checking your regular tyres so should be done when you check your tyres and especially before a long journey.
  • Learn how to change a tyre: Knowing how to change a tyre is a crucial life skill. Practice in a safe environment if
    you’ve never done it before.
  • Carry the right tools: Make sure you have a jack, a tyre iron, and any other necessary tools to change a tyre. These should be easily accessible in your vehicle.
