What is Vapour Blasting?

Vapour blasting, also known as vapour honing or wet blasting, combines abrasive media with water and pressure to remove layers of dirt, oil and grime.

It is often used to remove old paint, coatings or corrosion from cars or components, specifically in restoration projects.

The abrasive media and water are mixed together before being blasted through a blast nozzle (hence the name).

The pressure and abrasive material break down the dirt surface, while the water acts as a buffer and floods the dirt so that it doesn’t fly away, creating debris from the process.

What Are The Benefits of Vapour Blasting?

There are several advantages to choosing vapour blasting over any other form of blasting, such as dry blasting.

1.

Finer, smoother finish - water acts as a lubricant, which softens the abrasive media’s impact.

2.

Reduced abrasive consumption - water carries the abrasive material more efficiently, reducing the amount needed.

3.

Less heat generation - less heat is generated in the process, so there is a reduced chance of warping or distorting the components.

4.

Dust-free - water weighs down the debris, reducing the dust and dirt flying off the product.

5.

Corrosion inhibition - the water can often include rust inhibitors, so you won’t need to worry about flash rusting immediately after the process.

6.

Time-saving - the process can be quicker than hand cleaning the products and will give you a better overall finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vapour blasting is a method of cleaning various materials. It is predominantly used on metal and breaks down and removes layers of dirt, such as oil and rust.

The process combines water, abrasive media and pressure to clean, polish and refine a surface without damaging it.

Vapour blasting differs from dry blasting because it uses water as a lubricant.

Dry blasting simply uses air pressure and an abrasive media

Vapour blasting reduces abrasive impact on the item, minimises heat and produces a smoother, more polished finish.

Vapour blasting can be used on a wide range of materials, including metals (aluminium, steel, titanium), plastics, glass, and composites. It’s suitable for delicate and heat-sensitive components as well.

At Sunrise MOT and Servicing, we specialise in cleaning metal products.

Yes, it is incredibly safe for delicate parts because the water softens the impact of the abrasive media, which reduces the risk of damage to thin-walled or sensitive components.
